Gay Rights

On November 4, 2008 Congress passed a bill in California banning same-sex marriage. This bill was called Prop 8. This proposition added a new section to Article I of the California Constitution stating that "only marriage between a man and  woman is valid or recognized in California."..........

People should have the right to choose who they want to get married with and others should respect their choice. Not allowing gay people to get married is not only oppressing their beliefs and lifestyle but it also makes them ashamed or embarrassed of who they are. There is a deep sense in the Latino culture that says that being gay is morally wrong. In the Latino culture men have a strong sense that they have to be masculine so when they meet someone who is gay, especially in their own family, they will over react and feel ashamed that they know a gay person and even mock them by saying things that will offend them.

One of the major supporters of Prop 8 was the Christian Church all across the US. Locally, the Joy Ministry For Christ in L.A. and the Chinese Evangelical Free Church in Monterey Park are two of the many churches alleged of being supporters of Prop 8. This gets me kind of mad and confused because I thought that the main philosophy or idea of the Christian Church is that God created all men equally. So then I guess that these Christian churches are in a way contradicting their beliefs or philosophies.

i think that is very hypocritical of the church to go against their own beliefs of men bieng created equal.

i think that your right because every one has the right to make their own life no matter who they are. there shouldn't be any one telling you what or how to make your own life.

After reading this article i feel like the churches are going against their own beliefs. In the us constitution says that all citizens have the right of beliefs and expression; i would of voted no against prop. 8 and let people get married with the same sex if that is what they want

Outstanding piece Francisco! The Mormon church was also involved in the Proposition 8 fight and it does raise serious questions about the role or culture and religion as you make clear in your article. I was also interested in the attention you place on the issue of equal rights and I think that is where it becomes a legal issue as well as a cultural/religious. I think that it is actually a violation of the "equal protection" clause of the 14th amendment and is thus unconstitutional to ban gay marriage. There are all the moral issues you point out but then there are also the civil rights issues around the fact that straight couples get advantages from the government in the form of tax breaks and enjoy legal rights to visit their spouse in the hospital, and so forth. What do you all think about the intersection of culture/religion/ and then law?

The attainment of equal rights in this country has been a long and challenging process. I have no doubt that gay marriage will one day achieve legality. Thank you for raising awareness and supporting equality!

    I love this article!!
To the extent that I understand how religious view homosexuals, I still do not believe that ppl cannot marry who they love. We are all still humans!
